Half-Life 2 Celebrates 20th Anniversary with Major Update and Free Access!

The legendary game Half-Life 2 is celebrating its 20th anniversary! Valve is marking this milestone by making the game temporarily free and releasing a comprehensive update. Add the game to your Steam library before November 18th at 10:00 AM to keep it forever.

What’s in the Update?

Valve has modernized the Half-Life 2 experience with this update, adding new content:

  • Episode One and Episode Two Support: You can now play both Episode One and Episode Two expansion packs alongside the base game. Access these contents from the main menu and automatically progress to the next chapter upon completion.
  • Developer Commentary: For the first time, Half-Life 2 includes developer commentary, featuring 3.5 hours of detailed insights into the game’s development process.
  • Steam Workshop Integration: Access player-created content through the Extras menu, customize your experience with mods and user-made campaigns.
  • Graphics and Technical Improvements: Visual bugs have been fixed, new graphics settings added, and lighting improved. You can now enjoy the game with better visuals on high-resolution displays.

Documentary and Special Materials

Valve has prepared a documentary sharing fascinating details about Half-Life 2’s development process. The film covers the challenges of game development, the early version leak, and Valve’s journey in building Steam. Additionally, historical presentations and rare developer materials that shed light on gaming history have been unveiled.

Raising the Bar Returns

The Raising the Bar book, which details the creation of the Half-Life series and sold out in the early 2000s, will be republished in 2025 with an expanded second edition. The book will include never-before-seen concept art for Episode One and Episode Two, as well as canceled ideas for Episode Three.
