Concerning News from Crysis 4
Bad news has arrived for Crysis fans. Crysis 4’s director Mattias Engström quietly left Crytek three months ago. This development raises questions about the game’s development process.
Crysis 4’s Management Process
Three years ago, Crytek announced Crysis 4 with a brief teaser video and later revealed that Hitman 3’s successful director Mattias Engström would lead the project. However, it has emerged that Mattias Engström left Crytek in November 2024 and returned to his former company, IO Interactive.
Engström, who has started working as a Principal Game Designer in his new position at IO Interactive, departed without any official announcement from Crytek. Such a quiet change sends negative signals about the project’s internal workings.
What’s the Status of Crysis 4?
Currently, there is no clear information about Crysis 4’s development stage. The director’s departure could lead to changes in the game’s foundation and timeline. However, Crytek’s lack of updates on this matter increases our concerns. Since we don’t know the project’s current stage, we unfortunately cannot comment on this situation. If it’s in the early stages of development or if the development process is going poorly, this could herald the game’s cancellation; if it’s near the end of development or if the process is going well, it might have no effect at all.
In December, Crysis’s official Twitter account unfollowed several accounts. If we remember correctly, the official account was following the game’s director and community managers. If the project has been shelved, it would explain the current situation very well. Currently, the account only follows Crytek, Cevat Yerli, CryEngine, and Hunt: Showdown accounts.
Conclusion
Mattias Engström’s departure raises questions about Crysis 4’s future. It remains to be seen how Crytek will manage the project despite this departure. Do you think this situation will affect the game’s quality and release date? It seems there’s nothing to do but wait for Crytek to make an announcement to learn more about Crysis 4. If there’s an update, we’ll share it with you.
Update 19.01.2025 17:38(GMT)
We looked at various Crytek employees’ LinkedIn accounts and noticed that some people working on Crysis 4 left Crytek in November 2024. Additionally, we saw that an employee who was working on Crysis 4 has now started working on Hunt: Showdown 1896 (another Crytek game) according to their social media.
In addition to all this, Jan David Hassel, who works as a Senior Game Designer on EA’s new Battlefield game, shared a post on his Bluesky account on December 9th saying “Layoffs at Crytek”.
The situation doesn’t look promising at all for Crysis 4. However, we can’t learn more until Crytek makes an announcement.

Update 04.02.2025 13:50(GMT)
Bri Williams, who worked as a Narrative Designer on Crysis 4, has left Crytek. In her LinkedIn post announcing her departure, she said it was time to leave Crytek as the company is now focusing more on Hunt: Showdown 1896.
We thought Crytek would focus on Crysis 4 after the release of Hunt: Showdown 1896, but the situation doesn’t look good for Crysis 4 at all. When Crytek was on the brink of bankruptcy, they survived thanks to Hunt: Showdown’s release. It seems more profitable for Crytek to work on an already successful service game than to create a new story-driven game from scratch. Unfortunately, we won’t be surprised if we hear news of Crysis 4’s cancellation soon.
